My contribution to Remembrance Day
They
left home keen to do their duty
for
King and country;
travelled
to a foreign land
with
joking comrades.
Now
the bravado has gone,
smothered
by stinking mud.
Their
haggard faces hidden by gas masks;
lack-lustrelessly
they followed orders.
Fear
like a sickly shroud enveloped them.
They
knew their fate;
an
inglorious end,
rotting
in shallow graves far from loved ones.
